TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik AK-47 MkII Stereo Sets incorporate key elements of classic circuits such as the U47 and M49.
The amplifier found in the TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik / R-F-T AK-47 MkII features a new proprietary circuit designed around a premium NOS (New Old Stock) EF732 pentode vacuum tube.
Sonically, the AK-47 MkII is a remarkably hi-fidelity microphone with a "present" but not "harsh" character, which in many ways is reminiscent of a cross between the historic M49 and U47/48 microphones of yesteryear. The result is a microphone with superior high frequency detail, a rich and powerful low end, and a delicate and intimate "air" that is usually found only in microphones several times the price.
The R-F-T AK-47 MkII began as a unique design to incorporate key elements of classic circuits such as the U47 and M49. These design decisions created a microphone with a wonderfully rich and warm low-mid frequency response ideal for vocals, bass (acoustic and electric), brass instruments, and drums. With these applications in mind, TELEFUNKEN Elektroakustik has developed the AK-47 MkII Stereo Set.
The matched Stereo Set comes in a custom locking flight case that carries both cables, shockmounts, microphones, wooden boxes, and an American-made dual-channel power supply unit. This newly designed power supply is fully regulated and will power one or both microphones simultaneously, and features a slow-ramping heater voltage to ensure vacuum tube longevity.
As mentioned, the amplifier of the AK-47 MkII draws inspiration from its predecessors. The design incorporates a NOS (new old stock) TELEFUNKEN EF732 vacuum tube and custom-made BV8 output transformer, recreated from the ground up with specs and datasheets from the original BV8 found in the U47. The circuitry is based off of the M49, coupled with a dual-membrane capsule configured for variable 9-polar pattern functionality. Each of these components is rigorously tested in our laboratory prior to installation, and hand-selected for matched pairs. The capsules have matched frequency responses, the tubes have matched gain and noise specs, and the amplifier circuits have matched gain and frequency response.
This results in a uniquely voiced microphone with superior high frequency detail without the unpleasant upper mid-range frequency bump. Coupled with its rich low-end qualities, the AK-47 MkII Stereo Set lends itself to a wide array of stereo recording applications.
Stereo recording techniques include X/Y coincidental pairs with the mics in cardioid, A/B spaced pairs with either cardioid or omni-directional patterns, and also a Blumlein pair, with each mic in a figure-8 polar pattern. These techniques will optimize the tailored frequency response of the AK-47 MkII to record source material including string sections, brass sections, percussion arrangements, and choir vocals.
The AK-47 MkII Stereo Set offers the user the knowledge and comfort that the tools they are using will give identical responses for their most important stereo recording.
